A 3D CONFIGURATOR INSIDE AN EXISTING SHOP SARAJEVO · SINCE 2020
Built on screen, made in wood.
Tochak is a Sarajevo workshop making wooden balance bikes for children by hand. The shop was already doing well, but it was missing one thing, letting the customer build and see the bike before ordering it. We built a configurator where the wheels, the handlebar and the seat are chosen on a 3D model, so the bike is ordered exactly as the customer imagined it.
Commissioned by Tochak, a Sarajevo brand of handmade wooden balance bikes and toys. A short brief, a precise requirement.
The brief arrived in three points: the wheel colour changes, the handlebar wood and the seat leather. Plus one wish, that the bike first appear in bare wood, as the starting option.
For the wheels, the order had to carry the exact colour code, because under it the workshop orders the paint from Caparol’s 3D-System PLUS collection, so the palette doubles as the supplier’s entire catalogue.1
The 3D model arrived as it is used in production, heavy CAD in three formats. In a browser that does not perform, so in Blender we cleaned it up and split it into the parts that get configured.2

The frames come from the configurator and the shop in production. The last frame of the third slide is a replica built from the delivered documentation, and order #182 is a demo order with fictional details.3
Five years on, the configurator is still doing its job.
The configurator still serves its purpose at tochak.ba/configurator. The palette, the model split into groups and the mechanics of choosing are the same as in 2020. The register on the site now counts 380 bikes built, each numbered and each carrying the name of the child it belongs to.4
An addition to a system that already worked.
The configurator is written in vanilla JavaScript, no framework. The shop was not changed but extended: the configured bike is added to the order with all its details, the price is set, and the rest works as it always did.

1 THE PALETTE
The palette holds 1,292 records, the 1,291 colours of the Caparol 3D-System PLUS collection plus the Natural we appended for bare wood, checked against Caparol’s own published composition of the collection.
2 THE MODEL
The delivered model carries 561,050 triangles across five named parts and fits into a 2.5 MB GLB file. The numbers are read out of the file itself.
